Soap For Hope is a concerted effort by The BritVil Community Food Pantry to add essential hygiene items to the healthy and nutritious food products we already provide to our needy clients each month. Soap For Hope was born out of a need brought to our attention by our volunteers. On a regular basis clients request basic hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste and feminine hygiene items along with their food, due to the fact that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefits can not be used to buy personal care items. Thru our Soap For Hope program we would like to be able to provide a basic hygiene kit to our clients each month as a way to promote good hygiene practices as well as help restore dignity.
The daily routine of brushing our teeth, showering and applying deodorant is something most of us do on auto-pilot and take for granted. But hygiene plays a much bigger part than just making us look presentable. Good hygiene protects us from illness and disease, and it affects the way people feel about themselves as well as the way other people perceive us.
A steady increase in the demand for hygiene items was noticed by our volunteers who interview our clients each month and when occasionally we had these items to provide the joy in our clients faces was overwhelming. Being able to provide such basic items as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, lotion, deodorant and feminine products to our clients will allow them to feel like they can better participate in society; giving confidence as well as promoting good health. It is a struggle for people facing poverty to afford housing, food and clothes. Often they are left with little or no money for many basic essentials, such as personal care products, that others take for granted and that are also critical for their mental and physical well-being. Thru our Soap For Hope program we will provide each client and family group with a hygiene kit ($10 per kit) that contains all the essentials needed to maintain good hygiene that promotes good health and a sense of well-being.
